The agriculture picture in Dunn County is a bright one. Over 415,000 acres can be attributed to agriculture. Dairying is the economic mainstay of Dunn County Agribusiness. Farm acreage has declined slightly, but far less than most sections this far north in the state. Of the work force in Dunn County, 11.3% work in agriculture compared to the state average of 4.6%. Dunn County population density is 45.7 persons per square mile. Other than dairying, agriculture in Dunn County includes apple orchards, fish farms and tree farming.

DEVELOPMENT

Due to its location 60 miles east of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, Dunn County is able to offer many advantages to business and industry including excellent access to labor; good transportation access; day care and health facilities including a medical clinic and hospital both affiliated with the Mayo system; and excellent educational institutions from secondary schools to the Chippewa Valley Technical College located in the Stout Technology Park to the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Both schools are well known for their partnerships with business and industry. The city of Menomonie is also well served by two industrial parks. The Stout Technology Park, a controlled aesthetic business setting for high technology manufacturing, research and development and service industries, offers tenants a unique working relationship with UW- Stout.

GOVERNMENT

The American tradition of local government by the people is exemplified well in Dunn County. Every one of the 29 villages and townships is governed by either a village or town board. Dunn County's interests are served by a Board of Supervisors staffed by a County Administrator. The City of Menomonie has a mayor/city council form of government with 11 council persons elected on a ward basis.

FIRE PROTECTION

Many fine up-to-date volunteer fire departments serve the communities of Dunn County. A full time municipal force serves Menomonie. A new fire station is planned for the east side of Menomonie.

HIGHWAYS

Highways serving Dunn County consist of Interstate 94, US 12 and State Highways 25 and 29. Dunn County has a fine network of County Trunk Highways providing over 1,000 miles of roadway.

RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Diversification is Dunn County's middle name for recreation. From public hunting grounds to fishing, from golf to hiking and snowmobiling, you pick the activity and Dunn County has the place to do it. There are 15,823 acres designed for recreational use. Over 864 acres are developed.

Dunn County has 3,364 acres of lakes and 198 miles of trout streams. Panfish, bass, walleye, northern pike and trout are all residents in Dunn County's lakes and' streams. Whether amateur or pro, there is a lake or stream in Dunn County for you.

Canoeing is a favorite pastime in Dunn County. Since the time of the early explorers, Dunn County waters have been traveled by canoe. At present, there are three canoe trails covering over 77 miles of beautiful scenery, with many public access points.

There are numerous launching sites in Dunn County for the boating enthusiast. Whether it's water skiing, sail boarding, fishing, or just a scenic ride, Dunn County will fill your needs.

Bowling establishments in Dunn County are located in Boyceville, Colfax and Menomonie. Tennis courts are available throughout the county. Four different golf courses are located in Menomonie and Colfax. Horseshoe courts are available in many area parks. Horseback riding trails are available in the northern part of Dunn County.

PARKS

Picnic areas and campgrounds, both public and private, abound in the clean fresh outdoors. Twenty separate camping grounds consisting of over 110 acres yield a total of 550 campsites. HUNTING

The hunter in Dunn County will find pheasant, partridge, squirrel, duck and the whitetail deer throughout the county. State owned or leased, the county owned land which is available for hunters amounts to some 13,600 acres in 1O areas. Be sure to seek permission before entering private lands.

Target and trap shooting facilities are available along with bow hunting target ranges.

DUNN COUNTY RECREATION PARK

Located in Menomonie, the Dunn County Recreation Park is home to the Dunn County Fair in July, hockey tournaments from October through March, Red Cedar Speedway Races from April through September, and many other weekend exhibits all year round ranging from horse shows to home shows. SNOWMOBILING

Dunn County has many fine snowmobile trails. There are state as well as private trails that are maintained through the Dunn County Snowmobile Association. Trail maps are available through the Chamber of Commerce office.

RED CEDAR STATE TRAIL

The 14.5 mile Red Cedar State Trail follows the Red Cedar River from Menomonie to Dunnville where it joins with the 20 mile long Chippewa Valley Trail to Eau Claire. The Red Cedar Trail, with its crushed limestone surface, is perfect for hiking, biking or cross country skiing. Bike and ski rentals are available in Menomonie.

HOFFMAN HILLS STATE RECREATION AREA

Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area is a hiking area. A 60 foot tower allows viewing of a four county area. Hiking trails traverse prairie, woodland, or wetlands.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AND CELEBRATIONS

Menomonie Theater Guild presentations, high school and UW-Stout drama and music presentations, art festivals, museums, and band concerts in the park give you many opportunities to be a participant or a viewer.

The whole family will have plenty of opportunities for fun and lots of good food at Menomonie's Summer Funfest, Winter Carnival and Tainter Days. 4th of July celebrations are held in Menomonie, Wheeler and Knapp (including snowmobile water cross races). The Boyceville Cucumber Festival, Colfax Free Fair, Colfax Fireman's Festival, Ridgeland's Labor Day Fair and Dunn County Fair complete the list of area celebrations.

MEDIA

Dunn County boasts four different papers and shoppers. Radio stations include AM/FM and educational as well as an educational television station. Cable hookups are available in Menomonie and the immediate surrounding area.

HEALTH CARE

Menomonie's Myrtle Werth Hospital/Mayo Health Systems and the Red Cedar Clinic/Mayo Health System provide health care to the population of Dunn County. The hospital has 63 beds, emergency room care, and operating room facilities. The clinic, located adjacent to the hospital, has a staff of 20 physicians and many support people. There are several nursing homes and residential care centers in the area. Many fine dentists, optometrists, chiropractors and veterinarians have offices in the county.
